About the school
St. Philip's Priory School was founded in 1927 by the Order of the Servants of Mary (Servite Sisters). Our religious origins guide the importance we place on fostering principles of compassion, service and respect. However, we are an inclusive community and welcome children from all faiths.
St. Philip's Priory School is located in the heart of Chelmsford on New London Road. We enjoy five acres of enclosed land, offering a spacious and tranquil setting for a child's education. Outdoor facilities include a playground, a football pitch, a cricket and rounders field, a tennis court and gardens. The main school has seven classes, accommodating children aged 4 to 11 and several additional facilities, including a computer suite, a library, an art studio, gymnasium and hall. Additionally, we run a well equipped, purpose-built nursery. Admission to the nursery may be assisted by government subsidies. Half or full day care is provided.
The quality of teaching at St. Philip's is excellent. We do not select or stream pupils by ability but seek to inspire them to achieve their full potential. This ethos has rewarded our graduating class with an 80 to 90 percent admissions rate into the 'consortium' schools† plus several prestigious independent schools in Essex. However, at St. Philip's we believe in a rounded education and offer a variety of clubs and extra-curricular activities to supplement your child's academic development. Our cadre of specialist music, sports, ballet and drama teachers ensure that our pupils are able to explore their talents fully, achieving a sense of confidence and accomplishment.
It is perhaps for all these reasons that St. Philip's Priory School was awarded a very favourable assessment by Ofsted in their latest inspection (2007) and an equally superlative assessment by the Brentwood Religious Education Service (BRES) (2007). We are proud of these achievements and believe that St. Philip's Priory school provides the best all-round primary education in Chelmsford. Explore this site and we're confident you will agree.
† The Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE) selects pupils on the basis of academic performance at age 11. They include Chelmsford County High School, King Edward VI Grammar School, Colchester Royal Grammar, Colchester County High School, Southend High Schools and Westcliff High Schools, among others.
