Class music lessons
Music education is directed by Mr Preston. Each class in the main school receives a music lesson twice a week in the New Hall. Pupils learn to sing and play the recorder. Pupils get the chance to show off their musical skills at an annual carol concert in December and an arts concert at Easter.
Mr Preston aims that every child is able to play a musical instrument and can read music by the time he or she leaves Prep 4. Additionally, he encourages pupils to develop an appreciation for all styles of music so that they may want to pursue music beyond the classroom.
Choir
Mr Preston conducts the school choir. Choir is open to all pupils in Preps 3 and 4 and is active in the community and beyond. St. Philip's Priory School Choir may be seen in Chelmsford shopping precinct every year in advent when they perform a number of carols for the public. The choir also performs at the mid-Essex Farleigh Hospice in support of their mission to enhance the lives of people with life-limiting illness. Each year, the choir is invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall or the Barbican in London as part of Barnardo's Young Supporters' Concert.
School shows
Every Christmas, the infant school (Admission, Kindergarten and Transition) and the nursery perform a nativity play for parents. Later in the year, as part of Prize-giving, Prep 4 put on a production, usually a musical. The leavers' show and prize giving is an opportunity for the graduating class to be acknowledged for their contributions to school life. In recent years, the PTA has organized a talent show for the Juniors, "Stars in Your Eyes."
